This year, DIFFA: Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS and the Thrive Tribe Foundation are teaming up to support their work of helping individuals impacted by HIV/AIDS. The auction will culminate at a reception on Saturday, October 21st from 4-6 PM.

We’ve been a supporter of Thrive Tribe Foundation (TTF) since we were introduced to the HIV advocacy group two years ago. TTF is a unique non-profit in the fight against HIV. They work to empower members to be active participants in their healthcare, and have a peer-to-peer model to create a community which is judgment free and provides a safe space. They have a plan to end HIV by using the available science and medication to educate members and the wider community.
This Saturday, August 12 marks the return of their annual Big Night Out event; and believe us, these guys know how to throw a great party!
Big Night Out is designed to showcase entertainment, LA lifestyles, fine dining, architectural design, outstanding auctions, and more. Hosted at Greystone Mansion, the Gala Reception is 4:00 – 7:00 PM featuring outstanding auctions and samplings from the finest local restaurants & caterers. Guests will then depart to one of the uniquely themed dinner parties throughout the Los Angeles area.
First up is the Wattles Mansion Showcase which will be unveiled this week and is open to the public March 23-April 16. The 2017 theme, Hollywood History: The New Classics, will demonstrate through interior design how to reinterpret a historic home for today’s contemporary lifestyle.
The magnificent Wattles Mansion was built in 1908, and was the original home of famous financier Gurdon Wattles who bankrolled much of early Hollywood. It’s a classic Mission Revival masterpiece designed by Myron Hunt and Elmer Grey, who also designed the Huntington Library, the Rose Bowl and the now-gone Ambassador Hotel. Today the residence, owned by the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, comprises the only remaining example of a pre-film industry Hollywood estate. It continues to receive lasting improvements to help preserve its status as one of the finest turn-of-the-century estates in Hollywood.
Participants this year include such noted designers as Woodson & Rummerfield’s House of Design; Melinda Ritz and Mae Brunken on behalf of the Set Decorators Society of America; Patrick Dragonette; David Dalton; Ryan Saghian; Winslow & Cohen; Kym Rodger; Nicole Gordon; Fernando Diaz; Anna Hoffman; Victoria Reitz; Leslie Shapiro Joyal; Jessica Brende; Kelley Jackson with the generous support of Ofir Grushkovski, owner of Future Home Builders; Kathleen Beall and Williams Sonoma Home.
Sponsors include Snyder Diamond, Sherwin Williams, Sub-Zero Wolf, LAYKIN et Cie, City of Los Angeles and City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks.
The Wattles Mansion will be open Thursdays through Sundays through April 16, from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Admission is $40 per person and groups of 20 or more will be $35 per person. For ticket sales, visit reitzhausproductions.com or wattlesshowcase.com.
We’re less than one week away from the 20th anniversary celebration of DIFFA’s DINING BY DESIGN!
This event is always a highlight of the March NYC design calendar and this year should be a blow out party as DIFFA celebrates 20 years of their signature fundraising event, DINING BY DESIGN. DBD features colorful and inspiring dining table installations; it’s a fun chance to see some of the most creative folks in the design industry bring their out-of-the-box ideas to the table (pun intended), all to support DIFFA’s HIV/AIDS advocacy work.
The party kicks off next Thursday, March 16, with Cocktails by Design at Pier 92. Tables will be on display and open for public viewing through Sunday, March 20. And DBD runs alongside the Architectural Digest Design Show so there’s even more to see once you make your way to the Piers on NYC’s west side.
And, be sure to check out the silent auction online HERE. Even if you can’t make the event, you can still support the cause by placing your bid to win some great items, including a weekend stay in Santa Monica and all-access passes to WestEdge in October (courtesy of Yours Truly).
Below are a just few of our favorite DINING BY DESIGN tables over the last few years.
We guarantee we’ll have more favorites to add to our list after next week!
We’re a proud sponsor of Eat2Give, a one day event here in Santa Monica that combines several of our favorite things: Supporting local, dining out at amazing spots and giving back to Santa Monica charities.
30 PARTICIPATING RESTAURANTS and 23 PARTICIPATING CHARITIES!
The more people participate, the more money is raised, the more exposure the restaurants get and the more people find out about the non-profits. Talk about a win/win!
So if you’re in the area next Saturday, pop in to support the below establishments (and their aligned charity partners). We’re already mapping out our culinary tour and hope to see you along the route!

Southern California is THE place for year-round outdoor living and entertaining. So what better venue to launch the West Coast edition of DIFFA’s Picnic by Design than with us at The Barker Hangar this Nov. 5.
While the city may be different, the DIFFA concept remains the same. Leading architects, designers and industry talents will create over-the-top picnic baskets that will be displayed and available for purchase at the fair as part of an online auction. On Saturday, November 5 from 3-6 PM, Picnic By Design guests will enjoy an afternoon of food and fine wine in the WestEdge outdoor lounge, designed and furnished by Roche Bobois. The lucky winners will be announced at the closing of the auction.
“DIFFA is excited to partner with the energetic leadership at WestEdge Design Fair to bring Picnic By Design to LA! We know there is an incredibly generous and growing design community in Southern California who is willing to join the fight against HIV/AIDS—and this is an incredible opportunity to raise funds and awareness. We look forward to the start of this partnership and are grateful for the generosity of all involved!” said Johanna Osburn DIFFA executive director.
Picnic By Design is hosted in cities throughout the country such as New York and Las Vegas and is part of DIFFA’s effort to raise awareness and critical funds toward the mission of supporting HIV/AIDS organizations across the country.
